Psychotherapy is a useful treatment process that helps clients overcome mental and emotional disturbances using psychological methods. The effectiveness of this process is based on the regular personal collaboration and rapport between the psychologist and client which allows the client to vent out and resolve emotions which are hindering their optimal daily functioning.
In a safe and non-judgemental environment, psychotherapy allows the client to:
- Identify the thoughts and feelings that are creating the mental and emotional disturbance.
- Set a clear desired expectation as to how they would like to change their internal state and external circumstances.
- Use various psychotherapy methods such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT) and Psychodynamic Therapy to help the client cope with their life situation and improve their social and personal adjustment.
Through this process, clients are able to let go of harmful thought patterns and form new positive self-preserving beliefs that enable them to live a happy and active life.
Psychotherapy is particularly helpful in dealing with depression, anxiety, post traumatic disorders, loss of a loved one, emotional trauma associated with a physical illness and mood disorders. Sessions can be done with individuals, couples or groups depending on the nature of the issues and are effective with both adults and children.
